FARMER FINED $3,000 AFTER WORKER HURT

A Beamsville farmer has been fined after one of his workers was injured last spring.

Trinidad Mendieta, a 34-year-old Mexican worker, was driving a tractor in May between farms on the North Service Rd. near Bartlett Rd. N. when a car rear-ended the tractor, causing it roll over.

Mendieta was airlifted to hospital in Hamilton with life-threatening injuries. He survived, but lost one of his legs.

The Ministry of Labour found the tractor's rollover protection structure was not engaged at the time of the crash and the worker had not been taught to use the system.

James Douglas Warner pleaded guilty to the violation earlier this month.

He was fined $3,000, plus a 25% victim fine surcharge.

The surcharge is credited to a special provincial government fund to assist victims of crime.
